« 7 thoughts I had while listening to Jimin's second solo album, "Muse"
For his second solo album, BTS's Jimin delivers a delightfully brighter release that stands in stark contrast to his first effort.
If Face was all shadows and murky waters, Muse lets the light in. A year and a half after his first solo project, Jimin released his second album, Muse, and it marks a clear departure from Face, which contained the tenderness of songs like "Like Crazy" and "Alone" or the raw anger of "Face - off." Instead, we got a playlist that became noticeably brighter and brought a good amount of eccentricity, as well as heartfelt lyrics, to the listening experience.
Adding to the mix, the BTS member ensures that his undeniable stage presence can shine on the new album. For the title track "Who," Jimin created an incredibly moving music video in which he moves down a Hungarian street at night, showing off his skillful moves and mesmerizing charisma while singing something about an anonymous lover. Now that we have the opportunity to see the full video and listen to the full album, all we have to do is sit back, relax and let the music take us on a journey.
Below are our seven thoughts on the seven-track effort that is Jimin's second album, Muse.
1. Compared to the dark and twisted turn that "Face-off" takes as Face's opening theme, "Rebirth (Intro)" feels like a huge sigh of relief that instantly spreads throughout your body at the twelfth point. The song greets us with its festive glow; If sprinkles on a cake had a soundtrack, this would be it.
2. It's show time. Similar to the idiosyncratic approach BTS leader RM takes in his own interlude songs, Jimin's personal song "Interlude: Showtime" is pure musical fun. It sounds like a marching band intro and is a fun preview of the next song, “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band.”
3. “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” is Jimin's most euphoric song on the album and his first collaboration with rapper Loco. Musically inspired by The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is a lively and daring escape: a symphonic cartoon about the search for new love.
4. When we get to “Slow Dance,” it’s pretty easy to suspect that our most beloved BTS member actually has a “muse.” The sweet melody has Jimin harmonizing with Sofia Carson's sweet voice to convey the message of a blossoming relationship, and their voices certainly melt like butter.
5. Do you remember "Filter"? Well, the sultry dance solo just met his younger, more adventurous siblings. "Be Mine" is a catchy Afrobeat experiment, and "Who," with its powerful swing and nostalgic R&B style, is certainly as believable as the new BTS concerts we're eagerly awaiting.
6. Interestingly, Muse's sound is much closer to what we originally envisioned for Jimin's first solo album. However, given the time difference between Face and the singer's enlistment date (late last year), we can't help but wonder if the albums' music was written at the same time. It turns out that Jimin was working with two very different sides of himself.
7. The album closes well with 'Closer Than This', a warm and honest tune that the singer dedicated to his fans when he went to work last year. For ARMY, it's a simple and adorable reminder that Jimin is our comfort.
